Get a Library Card

Residents of California can get a free library card. At this time, Palo Alto residents have the option of providing these documents virtually by calling the eLibrary line: 650-838-2977.

  • Be a resident of California.

  • A photo ID.
  • Proof of your current California address.

Step 3.Fill out the online registration form

Pre-register for a Library Card

You will be given a temporary library account with a temporary library card number. This gives you access to limited online resources. During the pandemic closure our content providers have extended services to temporary card holders. Learn more about the expanded access for new temporary card holders.

Step 4.To receive a permanent library card

You must provide in-person verification of being a California resident at the library. The following library branches are currently open: Mitchell Park, Rinconada, and Children's Library. Be prepared to provide a photo ID and proof of your current California address when you arrive.
