The Utilities Engineering and Operations Division maintains and operates the electric distribution system.

The Electric Utility is proud to be recognized by the American Public Power Association for our superior reliability, safety and system improvement record.

Gas

The City of Palo Alto Gas Engineering division is responsible for planning, designing, budgeting and construction of major capital improvements to the city’s gas distribution system. This program replaces approximately 30,000 linear feet of gas mains and 500 services each year.

The Gas Operations division is responsible for maintaining, operating and regulatory compliance of the city’s gas distribution system.

Wastewater (Sewer)

The City of Palo Alto Wastewater Engineering Section is responsible for planning, designing, budgeting and construction of major capital improvements to the city’s wastewater collection system. This program rehabilitates or replaces about 200,000 linear feet of wastewater mains and 2,000 service laterals each year.

The Wastewater Collection Operations Section is responsible for cleaning, maintaining, operating and regulatory compliance of the city’s sanitary collection (sewer) system.

Water, Gas & Wastewater Utilities Standards

These standards govern the requirements for design and construction of all water, gas, and wastewater utility facilities within the City of Palo Alto. Private utilities on private property are under the jurisdiction of the City's Development Services Division. All WGW utility projects within the City's public right of way (including gas services up to and encompassing the gas meter) shall conform to these standards and the Public Works Standard Drawings and Specifications unless otherwise approved in writing by the Water, Gas, Wastewater Engineering Manager. 

Water

The City of Palo Alto Utilities Water Engineering Section is responsible for planning, designing, budgeting and construction of major capital improvements to the city’s water distribution system. This program replaces approximately 15,000 linear feet of water mains each year.

Several years ago, Water Engineering completed an Emergency Water Supply and Storage Project to increase the City’s water system storage and supply reliability during catastrophic emergencies.

The Water Operations Section is responsible for maintaining, operating, and ensuring water quality conforms to drinking water standards.
