Cool Block Palo Alto
Imagine a Palo Alto where neighbors are living sustainably, are disaster resilient, and working together to solve problems. With Cool Block Palo Alto, we are creating a healthier, happier, more resilient and more environmentally aware community -- and show the world that it can be done.
Cool Block Palo Alto engages a team of neighbors living on a block (or in an apartment building) to tackle the most critical issues of our time – climate change, a fraying social fabric and disaster resiliency – by providing a structured approach to making meaningful and lasting changes in our community as well as building our capacity to achieve large goals in a short time period.
The City has launched 25 new blocks for 2019 in a pilot program partnership with the non-profit Empowerment Institute to provide Cool Block Palo Alto. Block leaders are currently knocking on their neighbors' doors and inviting them to connect and learn about the program. Block leaders have joined from all over Palo Alto adding new Cool Blocks throughout the community. The volunteer Block leaders have signed up to lead their blocks in community building, carbon reduction, and emergency preparedness over the next few months.
