Caltrans has postponed lane closures and the full overnight closure of Interstate 101 (US 101), between San Antonio Road and Embarcadero Road, in Palo Alto, Santa Clara County. The closures were scheduled between February 11 and continue through Sunday, February 14. The work and closure will be postponed until further notice and is the result of a technical transport/permitting issue.
The City of Palo Alto is planning to install three prefabricated steel bridge segments across West Bayshore Road, East Bayshore Road, and Highway 101 between February 11 and February 14. The following closures and detours will be in effect overnight only.
February 11-12 - West Bayshore Road Closure
West Bayshore Road will be closed for installation of the first steel bridge section from Thursday, February 11 at 8 p.m. until Friday, February 12 at 6 a.m., weather permitting.
This section of the bridge is 100-foot long and weighs approximately 66,000 lbs. Bridge components and cranes will be set up on southbound 101 and West Bayshore road to lift and place the bridge. February 12-13 - East Bayshore Road Closure
East Bayshore Road will be closed for installation of the second steel bridge from Friday, February 12 at 8 p.m. until Saturday, February 13 at 6 a.m., weather permitting.
This section of the bridge is 100-foot long and weighs approximately 66,000 lbs. Bridge components and cranes will be set up on northbound 101 and East Bayshore road to lift and place the bridge. The following detour will be in effect during the closure: traffic in both northbound and southbound directions via Embarcadero Road, Greer Road, Oregon Expressway, West Bayshore Road, Fabian Way, Charleston Road, and San Antonio Road.
February 13-14 - Highway 101 Closure
Caltrans will perform an overnight closure of US-101, between San Antonio Road and Embarcadero Road, in Palo Alto. Caltrans will begin with a partial closure of US-101 starting at 8 p.m. Saturday, February 13, and the freeway will be fully closed in northbound and southbound directions between San Antonio Road and Embardacero Road on Sunday, February 14, between the hours of 1:30 a.m. and 6 a.m., weather permitting. The full southbound and northbound closures are needed for the safe installation of the final segment of the new Highway 101 Pedestrian / Bike Bridge. Motorists are advised to expect delays and allow extra time for their commute.
This section of the bridge is approximately 107-foot long and weighs approximately 71,000 lbs. The freeway closure will not require any closure of City’s roads or streets. Changeable message signs and directional signs will be in place to assist motorists traveling in the area. Please follow posted detour instructions.
