Information on the January 6 Assault on the U.S. Capitol

Since the terrible events of January 6 in Washington DC, a number of Palo Altans have inquired whether any member of the Palo Alto Police Department was involved in the assault on the U.S. Capitol. We appreciate the community’s concern and desire for accountability. At this time, we do not have any evidence or specific allegation that any member of the Palo Alto Police Department participated in the January 6 assault on the Capitol, nor are we aware that any of our personnel were in Washington DC at that time.

If we become aware that any of our personnel were present and may have committed a crime, the Police Department will immediately launch an internal investigation into the matter. Like with any allegation of illegal conduct, such an investigation could have both administrative and criminal consequences, up to and including termination from employment and/or criminal prosecution.

For more information on the Palo Alto Police Department’s disciplinary policy and standards of conduct, refer to our Section 340 of our Policy Manual here.  For more information on our Independent Police Auditor, who reviews internal investigations conducted by the Police Department and produces a public report about them, click here.
