Caltrain To Collect Public Feedback for New Electric Trains

Caltrain is asking the public to provide feedback and input on design details of its future fleet of Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trains.

The EMU trains will replace approximately 75 percent of the current diesel fleet and operate between San Francisco and San Jose, when the railway is electrified as part of the Caltrain Modernization Program

In May, the Caltrain board of directors issued a Request for Information (RFI) for the procurement of electric trains. The rail agency is soliciting feedback from the public about how the new trains should be constructed to manage capacity on key issues such as seats/standees, bathrooms, and bikes on board. 

These meetings will focus primarily on how the trains will be constructed to manage capacity. Future public outreach efforts, after the car builder has been selected, will focus on additional amenities that could be part of the train design such as specific configurations of bikes, seats, and bathrooms as well as elements that affect the aesthetics and comfort.

Caltrain aims to collect public feedback during this initial outreach through the end of September.

Feedback from the public will be coupled with staff technical analysis to help inform the Request for Proposal (RFP) for the new trains. It's important to note that while initial outreach is being conducted on the new vehicles, the project has not yet been approved and is pending environmental clearance.  The RFP will be issued after the environmental process is complete, scheduled for the end of 2014. 

By electrifying the system, Caltrain will operate quieter, cleaner, and more efficient train service to more riders. Increased capacity and improved service will help Caltrain meet increasing ridership demand and alleviate local and regional traffic congestion. 

Full conversion of the diesel fleet to EMUs will occur at a future time when funding is identified and the remaining diesel trains reach the end of their service life.
