City of Palo Alto and HP Inc. Complete One of the City’s Largest Solar Array Projects at the Company’s Headquarters
September 6, 2019 – Palo Alto, CA – The City of Palo Alto and HP Inc. are announcing the completion of a new solar array project on the company’s Palo Alto campus. The project combines rooftop and carport solar photovoltaic (PV) systems containing 3,372 solar panels which are projected to generate 2,355 megawatt hours (MWh) of energy. That is equivalent to enough electricity to power 263 average Palo Alto homes for a year. The system is expected to offset 1,700 metric tons of carbon dioxide; a significant commitment to protecting the environment.
To celebrate the completion of this project, CPAU and HP are hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, September 10 from 10-11am at the HP campus parking lot array. Palo Alto Mayor Eric Filseth will give remarks as well as Kim Rivera, HP’s Chief Legal Officer and President of Strategy and Business Management, and Cynthia Rock, HP’s Head of Global Real Estate.
Over the last three years, HP has worked with the City of Palo Alto Utilities (CPAU) on multiple energy efficiency projects, reducing the company’s energy consumption by more than 1,400,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity and over 104,700 therms of natural gas. These savings equate to a year-over-year site-wide energy reduction of over 8%. HP’s solar array project is now the largest of six total projects currently participating in the Palo Alto CLEAN (Clean Local Energy Accessible Now) program, in which the City buys back electricity from businesses generating solar on their properties.
The partnership between the City and HP will contribute a large amount of renewable energy to Palo Alto’s electricity grid, supporting the City’s carbon neutral electric portfolio and sustainability goals. The City adopted an aggressive climate action plan in 2016 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80% below 1990 levels by 2030. Palo Alto’s CLEAN projects provide the City with about 5,000 MWh per year of renewable power, and the HP solar array will contribute 1.44 megawatts (MW) of dc power to the grid.
The solar project at HP’s Palo Alto campus is part of HP’s Sustainable Impact strategy. HP has committed to source 100% renewable electricity for their global operations by 2035. The 1.44 MW of solar electricity produced on-site will offset the equivalent of over 1.9 million pounds of coal yearly, in HP’s estimate.
