Biennial Citywide Yard Sale Returns, Reduces Landfill Items
It’s time once again to register for the biennial Citywide Yard Sale which is taking place on Saturday, June 1, 2019, from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. The sale, which is coordinated by Zero Waste Palo Alto and the Palo Alto Weekly, is free to register and open to all Palo Alto residents.
Residents interested in selling must register by Friday, May 10. Registration begins on Monday, April 1 and can be done online or by calling Zero Waste Palo Alto at (650) 496-5910. The online sign-up form is available at: www.PaloAltoOnline.com/yardsale.
“By coordinating yard sales, we hope to encourage the Bay Area community to keep useful items out of the landfill,” said Wendy Hediger, Environmental Specialist.
Purchasing second-hand items not only helps reduce waste, but it has a smaller carbon footprint than buying brand-new items, which require more energy to produce and transport.
Registered sellers will receive a fact sheet with tips for a successful sale and a list of local reuse organizations (for items that don’t sell). Sellers will also have their addresses featured on the official yard sale map that will be issued on the website and in the May 31 edition of the Palo Alto Weekly.
“Reuse is much better than recycling,” said Hediger. “Reselling used, but functional items is good for our community and the environment.”
Zero Waste Palo Alto is a program of the Public Works Department. Their mission is to work in partnership with the community to conserve resources and minimize material consumption while striving to reduce our waste to zero by 2021.
