The renovation and expansion of Children’s Library was completed in September, 2007, and no further work is planned. This project was funded by the City, federal grants, and private donations, including major contributions from the Palo Alto Library Foundation and the Friends of the Palo Alto Library.  The total project cost, including new furniture and equipment, was $4.1 million.
Exterior Children's Library

This project included historic rehabilitation and expansion of a much-loved community asset. The project included expansion of the Children’s Library from its previous size of 3,442 gross square feet to approximately 6,043 gross square feet. Through construction of an approximately 1,892 square foot single story north addition, the completed project provides ADA-accessible restrooms and a program room for story times and other similar activities. The program room features folding doors leading to the Secret Garden to allow for outdoor programs. The approximately 709 square-foot single-story south addition houses staff work areas that were shifted from the existing historic building, thereby allowing the public reading room to expand by more than 50%. The project included the installation of a ground source heat pump that heats and cools the building without creating noise disruption to the neighborhood. The historic rehabilitation included a comprehensive structural upgrade of the existing building, and repairs or replacement of its outdated heating, mechanical, electrical and other systems.
