Eddie the Police Dog
Palo Alto, CA -- The Palo Alto Police Department is hosting a free event this Saturday to introduce the public to Eddie, our newest police dog!

The event will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2013, from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Heritage Park at 300 Homer Avenue, near downtown Palo Alto.

Eddie joined the Department in April 2013.  He is a two-year-old German Shepherd currently working night shift.  Eddie's handler will be on hand to give a brief presentation and lead Eddie through a series of obedience drills.  Eddie’s specially-equipped patrol car will also be available for viewing.

"We’re very proud to have Eddie as a member of our Department," said Chief Dennis Burns, who will be speaking at the event.  “We hope that everyone will take advantage of this unique opportunity to meet Eddie in person and learn about the important role police dogs play in our daily operations.”

Eddie is quickly becoming something of a social media star on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/PaloAltoPolice), as he has posed for a series of photos at various unique locations throughout Palo Alto.  In the days before this event, we are posting one new photo each morning.  An image of Eddie on his patrol car is attached to this release.

Our two canines are assigned to the patrol division.  They supplement police operations by helping to locate individuals and contraband, and helping to apprehend criminal offenders.  Eddie lives at home with his handler, and comes to work with him every night.  Eddie and his handler undergo extensive, ongoing training to ensure that they are as prepared as possible to deal with anything they could encounter together on the street.

This event is designed for families, and we encourage children to attend.  Heritage Park has a playground that is a perfect place for children to play either before or after the event.
