Palo Alto, CA -- An unknown suspect armed with a handgun and wearing a handkerchief mask robbed a gas station near Highway 101 this morning.  No one was injured and the suspect is at large.

On Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at about 11:18 a.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received a     9-1-1 call from a clerk of the Shell Gas Station at 1161 Embarcadero Road reporting the station had just been robbed at gunpoint, and the suspect had fled onto Highway 101 in a vehicle.  Officers checked the area, but were unable to locate the suspect.

The investigation revealed that the suspect drove his vehicle into the gas station and then entered the clerk's booth.  There were three employees in the booth (a man in his fifties, a woman in her forties, and a woman in her thirties).  The suspect pointed a handgun at them and demanded money.  The victims complied and handed over cash from the register.  The suspect returned to his vehicle and the victims last saw him driving onto the southbound Highway 101 on-ramp from eastbound Embarcadero Road.  There were no customers in the booth at the time of the robbery.

The victims described the suspect as a black male, about six feet tall with a thin build.  He was wearing a black sweatshirt with the hood over his head, dark pants, and a white handkerchief over his face.  The victims could not estimate his age due to his obscured face, and no sketch will be forthcoming.  They described his vehicle as a newer gray Acura MDX sport utility vehicle.  They said the handgun was a black semi-automatic pistol.  Two surveillance photos of the suspect are attached to this release.

Detectives from the Palo Alto Police Department are actively investigating this robbery.  Anyone with information is asked to call our 24-hour dispatch center at 650-329-2413.  Anonymous tips can be e-mailed to or sent via text message or voice mail to 650-383-8984.
