Palo Alto, CA – The City is hosting an Open House at the Development Center to highlight recent achievements made through the initiative titled Blueprint for a New Development Center and give the community an opportunity to meet Development Services Director Peter Pirnejad and the new Project Coordination Team. The event will be held from 4 - 6 PM on Tuesday, February 5, 2013, in the Development Center at 285 Hamilton Avenue.

In July 2010, City Manager James Keene announced a new initiative titled Blueprint for a New Development Center, which identified planned changes to the City's building and development permitting processes intended to improve customer satisfaction and expedite service delivery. Since that time City staff has worked with the Development Customer Advisory Group, a team of local building industry experts and citizens who represent a wide range of Development Center customers, to create a new staff model, rent additional space, redesign the existing space and implement technology projects.

"Our goal is to have a Development Center that supports the future economic interests of our City as well as the current needs of our residents," said City Manager James Keene. “We've made significant progress on achieving some key objectives of our multi-faceted Blueprint program and want to invite members of the community to join us in celebrating these recent milestones.”

In October 2012, Peter Pirnejad was hired as the Development Services Director to implement an effective and efficient development services process as well as employing best practices and performance improvements. Mr. Pirnejad oversees the newly formed Project Coordination Team, which was created on December 19, 2012 with hiring of three new Development Project Coordinators. In order to ensure that staff is trained adequately, the Development Center hours have been adjusted to 9 AM - 4 PM. Staff training will occur daily from 8 AM to 9 PM, with specialized instruction focusing on all development disciplines.

Through a collaborative process with City team members and community members, additional space was rented on the second floor at the Development Center. This new space now hosts the Building and Fire Inspection teams as well as three conference rooms. The first floor was redesigned to accommodate staff from Public Works, Planning, Utilities and Development Services Departments. The new layout has common plan check review areas for simultaneous multi-department review. Finally, the City continues to deploy new and innovative technologies such as iPads to facilitate the transfer of information and provide real-time permit data in the field.

“I am impressed with the commitment and dedication of the team members in the Development Services Department. Their focus and attention to quality is second to none,” said Peter Pirnejad, Development Services Director. “I look forward to working with the Development Customer Advisory Group and my colleagues to further advance the goals set forth in the Blueprint,” he added.
