Pedestrian Struck and Killed by Vehicle on Embarcadero Road
Contact : Sean Downey, Officer, Police    650-329-2413
Palo Alto, CA -- A pedestrian crossing Embarcadero Road last night was struck and killed by a vehicle.

On Friday, January 25, 2013, at about 7:59 p.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received a 9-1-1 call reporting a major injury accident in the 800 block of Embarcadero Road.  Officers from the Palo Alto Police Department and personnel from the Palo Alto Fire Department both responded to the scene.

The initial investigation revealed that a Palo Alto resident in her seventies had been crossing Embarcadero Road southbound on foot between Walnut Drive and Bret Harte Street.  There is no crosswalk in that area.  A 2001 Toyota Tacoma pick-up truck heading eastbound in the number one lane of Embarcadero Road struck the pedestrian.  The driver of the vehicle a San Jose resident in her thirties, immediately stopped at the scene and is fully cooperating with the investigation.  Paramedics from the Palo Alto Fire Department transported the pedestrian to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead by medical personnel.

Officers from the Palo Alto Police Department's Specialized Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) Team are actively investigating this incident.  The cause of the collision has not yet been determined.  Police do not believe that drugs or alcohol were a factor, and the driver of the vehicle has not been arrested or cited.  Police are not identifying the decedent in accordance with our standard procedures involving fatal collisions.  The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office controls the release of that information.

We ask that anyone who witnessed this collision contact our 24-hour dispatch center at 650-329-2413. Anonymous tips can be e-mailed to paloalto@tipnow.org or sent via text message or voice mail to 650-383-8984.
