Suspect Exposes Himself to Woman in Fitness Center
Contact : Kara Apple, Sergeant, Police    650-329-2413
Palo Alto, CA -- For the second time in two days, an unknown suspect exposed himself to a woman in Palo Alto.  Police believe it is likely the same suspect in both incidents.

On Thursday, January 10, 2013, at about 6:52 a.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received a 9-1-1 call from an employee of Equinox, a fitness center located at 440 Portage Avenue.  The employee reported that a female customer had just seen a man with his pants down near the gym.  The woman was walking through a newly-constructed hallway that connects what was once two separate businesses.  The hallway she was in is enclosed by clear glass walls and connects the two buildings.  The suspect was standing outside, and was facing the inside of the hallway looking through the glass wall.

The victim told an Equinox staff member what she had seen and said the suspect had walked away on foot, eastbound on Acacia Avenue towards Fry's Electronics.  Although the victim told the staff member that she did not want to involve the police, the staff immediately called 9-1-1 anyway to report the incident.  The victim left the scene before officers arrived.  Police have been attempting to locate the victim, whose age is presently unknown, to get a detailed statement and suspect description from her.  If we obtain additional information or a sketch, we will release it as soon as it becomes available.

The victim described the suspect to the staff member as a white male in his twenties, between 6 feet and 6 feet 2 inches tall.  He weighed about 180 pounds and had dark hair.  The suspect was wearing a black sweatshirt and black sweatpants.  The hood of the sweatshirt was pulled up over his head.

This is the second indecent exposure incident that has occurred in Palo Alto in the past two days.  The first incident occurred on January 8, 2013, at approximately 11:14 p.m. in a parking lot on Sherman Avenue, less than a half-mile away from this crime.

Detectives from the Palo Alto Police Department are working on both investigations and believe, based on the descriptions provided and geographic proximity, that the suspect is likely the same person.  Officers are increasing patrols in the area.  Prior to these two crimes, there had been no similar cases reported in Palo Alto for the past several months.

Police recommend that people remain aware of their surroundings, and report suspicious behavior immediately to 9-1-1.  Indecent exposure is a misdemeanor crime, but becomes a felony if the suspect has a prior indecent exposure conviction.

Police ask that anyone who may have information about these crimes contact our 24-hour dispatch center at 650-329-2413.  Anonymous tips can be e-mailed to paloalto@tipnow.org or sent via text message or voice mail to 650-383-8984.
