Palo Alto, CA -- A man armed with a handgun entered Provident Credit Union in Palo Alto this afternoon and robbed the business of an undisclosed amount of cash.

On Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at about 3:36 p.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received a confirmed bank robbery alarm from Provident Credit Union at 2390 El Camino Real.  Officers arrived shortly thereafter, but were unable to locate the suspect despite an extensive check of the area.  No one was injured during the robbery.

The investigation revealed that the suspect entered the credit union, displayed a black handgun to the tellers, and demanded money.  The tellers complied with his demand, and the suspect fled on foot.  Witnesses last saw the suspect headed northbound on the sidewalk of El Camino Real near the intersection with Cambridge Avenue.

Witnesses described the suspect as a white male in his thirties, about 6 feet 1 inch tall, with a scar near his right eye.  He was wearing a white cap with writing on it, a tan shirt, a tan jacket, and flip-flops.  He was carrying a bright yellow plastic shopping bag with a black "Forever 21" logo on it.  A Provident Credit Union surveillance photo of the suspect is attached to this release.  In the photo, the yellow bag is visible on the counter between the suspect and the teller.  A sketch of the suspect is also attached, and was added on January 10, 2013.  Pay special attention to the scar and the suspect's complexion.

Detectives are actively investigating this robbery.  Anyone who recognizes the suspect or who may have information about this incident is asked to call our 24-hour dispatch center at 650-329-2413.  Anonymous tips can be e-mailed to or sent via text message or voice mail to 650-383-8984.
