Palo Alto, CA -- Officers from the Palo Alto Police Department are investigating an early-morning break-in of an occupied residence where the unknown suspect may have been about to commit a sexual assault on the female resident.

On Thursday, November 29, 2012, at about 2:21 a.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received a 9-1-1 call from a resident in the 100 block of Hawthorne Avenue reporting that an intruder had just been in her home.  Officers arrived on scene within two minutes of being dispatched and began an area search for the suspect with the assistance of a canine unit from the Mountain View Police Department.  Police were unable to locate the suspect.

The initial investigation revealed that the victim, a woman in her twenties, was awakened by an intruder in her bedroom.  The victim screamed, and after a brief struggle, the suspect fled on foot.  The victim sustained a bruised wrist but was not otherwise injured.  She did not require medical attention.  It appears as though the suspect gained entry to the residence by forcing open the front door of the residence.

The victim described the suspect as a male with an average build.  He was wearing a hooded dark jacket or sweatshirt and dark pants.  The victim was unable to determine the suspect's age or race.

Detectives from the Palo Alto Police Department are actively investigating this incident.  Police ask that anyone who may have information about this crime contact our 24-hour dispatch center at 650-329-2413.  Anonymous tips can be e-mailed to or sent via text message or voice mail to 650-383-8984.
