Palo Alto City Library Rated One of America's Star Libraries
Contact : Monique le Conge, Library Director    (650) 329-2403

Palo Alto, CA –Palo Alto City Library has once again been rated one of America's Star Libraries by the Library Journal Index of Public Library Service. Additionally, PACL is one of 111 public libraries to receive Star awards in all five LJI editions. The national Star ratings are based on four major ways customers use their public libraries:

  • Visits to the library
  • Items checked out
  • Attendance at library programs
  • Public Internet computer use

Each of these four performance indicators is calculated using per capita rates. Together they offer a measurement of each library’s service to its community in comparison to peer libraries based on total operating expenditures. In its peer library group, Palo Alto City Library once again earned four stars, with a notably high number of visits to the library per capita and of items checked out from the collection per capita.

"Palo Alto has a long history of excellence in library services to the community," said Palo Alto Mayor, Yiaway Yeh. "This is evident in the variety of programs and the diversity of collections available. For example, 63% of Palo Altans have a library card, programs for all ages have increased attendance, virtual access to library services has expanded, and the high circulation of items demonstrate that our public libraries are an integral part of our community member's lives."

The Library Journal Index of Public Library Service is unique in its deliberate focus on the services people receive from their public library. As a national rating system, it is designed to recognize and promote America's public libraries, to help improve the pool of nationally collected library statistics, and to encourage library self-evaluation. This year’s rating is based on 2010 data released by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).
