Suspect Arrested for YMCA Auto Burglaries
Contact : Brian Philip, Detective Sergeant, Police    650-329-2413
PALO ALTO, CA -- On July 26, 2012, detectives from the Palo Alto Police Department arrested 48-year-old Reynaldo Gomez of Los Gatos.  Gomez is responsible for a string of auto burglaries throughout Santa Clara County and beyond.  Gomez would specifically target gym parking lots where he would perform "window smash" auto burglaries.  Three such burglaries occurred in the parking lot of the Palo Alto YMCA at 3412 Ross Road on July 18, 2012.  His usual take would consist of purses, bags, and small electronic items.  So far, he has been tied to auto burglaries in Palo Alto, Campbell, San Jose, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, and San Ramon.

Detectives were able to tie Gomez to the burglaries because he used a stolen credit card at Costco.  The credit card he used belonged to a Palo Alto victim and did not match his personal Costco membership card.  Detectives used this information to locate Gomez and arrested him without incident outside of a San Jose courthouse where he was scheduled to appear on another matter.  Detectives then performed a probation search at his residence in Los Gatos.  During that search, detectives discovered a plethora of additional stolen property.  That property was linked to auto burglaries in other cities as mentioned above.

Detectives from the Palo Alto Police Department are continuing to investigate this crime to identify additional victims.  Gomez was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on multiple counts of burglary and possession of stolen property.

The Palo Alto Police Department would like to remind you to keep all valuables out of plain sight when you leave your vehicle unattended.  We also recommended always locking your car's doors, no matter how short a time you may be away from your vehicle.
