Contact : Agent Marianna Villaescusa, Police Department    650-329-2413
Palo Alto, CA -- An elderly man used a handgun to commit suicide this morning at Mitchell Park in Palo Alto.

At about 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 28, 2012, our dispatchers received a 9-1-1 call from Mitchell Park at 600 East Meadow Drive, reporting that a person had shot himself. Officers from the Palo Alto Police Department arrived shortly thereafter to find an elderly man with a single gunshot wound, and they located a handgun nearby. Personnel from the Palo Alto Fire Department pronounced him dead at the scene. No one else was injured.

There were a sizable number of people in the park at the time, including a small group of young children from a private summer camp. The private organization running the camp has notified parents of the children, and is providing counselors as needed. Personnel from the Palo Alto Police Department have been working closely with the organization to ensure that occurs.

Out of respect for the victim and the people in the park during this incident, the Palo Alto Police Department will not be releasing any additional details. As is standard procedure in suicide cases, the Palo Alto Police Department does not release the identity of the victim.
