Palo Alto, CA --
A man who stabbed another in the leg during a fight inside a downtown Palo Alto convenience store early this morning is in custody for assault with a deadly weapon. The victim received treatment at a local hospital for minor injuries.

At about 1:33 a.m. on Friday, March 30, 2012, officers from the Palo Alto Police Department responded to the 7-Eleven store at 401 Waverley Street on a report of a fight inside with one subject armed with a knife. At about 1:38 a.m., officers located him two blocks away on Waverley Street at Hamilton Avenue and detained him for investigation.

The investigation revealed that the suspect and victim became involved in a verbal confrontation that turned into a mutual combat physical fight while they were shopping inside the store. The two did not previously know each other. During the incident, the suspect stabbed the victim once in the shin with a folding knife. Paramedics from the Palo Alto Fire Department transported the victim, a male in his forties, to a local hospital for treatment. He was released later in the morning. The suspect also sustained an injury to his finger during the fight that required medical attention at a local hospital.

Police booked 26-year-old Cody Cowin of San Rafael into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for one count of assault with a deadly weapon.
