Palo Alto's First Dream Library Realized
Construction Ends on Downtown Library
Contact : Monique le Conge, Library Director    650-329-2403
Palo Alto, CA – Palo Alto's beloved Downtown Library will soon reopen after a 14-month renovation project completed on time.  Funded by Measure N, this voter-approved project marks the auspicious start of a city-wide effort to bring state-of-the-art library facilities to Palo Alto citizens.

The Downtown Library, built in 1971, has been improved with increased public space for print and media collections and seating, better lighting and accessibility, and new mechanical systems. Further improvements include a community meeting and program room, a dedicated children’s room, and a group study room. The renovation features vibrant new interior spaces, colors and finishes, while preserving the building’s distinct exterior architecture. The Palo Alto Library Foundation has provided funding for new furniture and equipment for the Downtown Library. The Friends of the Palo Alto Library are contributing funding for books for the Downtown Library collection.

"The voters of Palo Alto will now be able to see the first result of their belief in a strong and vital library system," said Library Director Monique le Conge. She continued, “As the first of three Measure N bond-funded projects to open, Downtown Library will be a reflection of the community and library advocates.  The library staff and I are thrilled to bring this dream to life.” Jim Schmidt, President of the Friends of the Palo Alto Library, added, "Palo Alto has had a city-operated library in Downtown since 1902, and the Friends are delighted to see this century-old tradition continue.” Bern Beecham of the Palo Alto Library Foundation remarked, "The Palo Alto Library Foundation is thrilled to be a partner with the City of Palo Alto and the Friends of the Palo Alto Library for the reopening celebration for Downtown Library.  PALF was pleased to provide the funds for all of the furniture and computers in the newly renovated library and thanks our many generous donors for their support."

The public will “Rediscover Downtown Library” at the upcoming grand reopening.
