Palo Alto Police Department Staff Volunteers To Raise Funds and Awareness For Special Olympics
Contact : Officer Marianna Villaescusa, Palo Alto Police Department    408-482-3594
Palo Alto , CA -- Members of the Palo Alto Police Department are once again volunteering their time to raise awareness and funds for local Special Olympic Athletes.

On Wednesday, June 15, 2011, from 4 to 8:30 PM, Police Department employees will trade in their handcuffs and badges for serving trays and breadbaskets. Police employees will wait tables in conjunction with Olive Garden staff and solicit "tips" as donations for Special Olympics. Members of the department's SWAT, K-9 and traffic team will be on hand to provide equipment demonstrations in the parking lot while you wait to be seated.

On Thursday, June 16, 2011, Palo Alto Police will participate in the Special Olympic Torch Run through the City of Palo Alto. With a police motorcade, law enforcement personnel will escort Special Olympic Athletes and the "Flame of Hope," the official Special Olympics torch, from Mountain View to Menlo Park. The Torch Run will continue from Palo Alto to UC Davis, just in time for the opening ceremonies of the 2011 Special Olympic Northern California Summer Games.

The Palo Alto Police Department invites the community to join us at the Olive Garden for dinner and then to cheer on the athletes and officers as they carry the "Flame of Hope” through Palo Alto. These events raise both awareness and much-needed funds for all of our brave Special Olympic heroes.

Proceeds from the Tip-a-Cop event assist Special Olympics Northern California in providing year-round sports training and competition to children and adults with disabilities at no cost to the athlete or their families. Donations are tax deductible and all money goes to Special Olympics. For further information on The Special Olympics of Northern California program, visit there website at http://www.sonc.org/.
