Stanford, CA – On Saturday, April 23, 2011, at 9:54 PM, the Palo Alto Fire Department responded to a fire in the Mechanical Engineer building at 447 Santa Teresa Street at Stanford University. This incident was initially dispatched as a private fire alarm and the reporting person on scene relayed that the building was full of smoke. The first responding unit (Engine 6) upgraded the response to a first alarm assignment and response included Palo Alto Fire Engines 1 and 2, Rescue-2, Truck-6, Medics, and the Battalion Chief to the incident.

The fire was contained within the Wood/Model Shop. The preliminary investigation indicated that the cause of the fire was undetermined; however, it points to the curing of epoxies and resins for a project as a possible cause of combustion.

The fire was extinguished within 20 minutes of the first engine's arrival on site when crews isolated it to the table top on which the project was being worked on. Environmental Health and Safety was notified, Santa Clara County Assistant Fire Marshal and Supervising Faculty responded to the scene. Approximate damage was undetermined.

The building was unoccupied and there were no injuries reported by fire personnel.
