WWII Artillery Shell Detonated on Alexis Drive
Contact : Agent Kara Salazar, Palo Alto Police Department    650-329-2413
Palo Alto, CA --  On Wednesday, November 24, 2010, at approximately 2:24 PM, a construction crew working on a hillside in the 3200 block of Alexis Drive, uncovered an unexploded artillery shell. The intact artillery shell was described to be approximately three inches wide and twelve inches long.

The construction crew evacuated the construction site and notified authorities, who responded to the scene.  At the request of the Palo Alto police Department, the Santa Clara County Bomb Squad responded to the scene and detonated the device at 5:35 PM. Because the artillery shell was old, unstable, and had been struck by the construction equipment, the decision was made to detonate it in place. No residential evacuations were necessary.

An AlertSCC message (formerly called  a CANS message) was sent to all affected area residents, notifying them of the situation.
