Contact : Lieutenant Sandra Brown, Palo Alto Police Department    650-704-2930
Palo Alto, CA - On October 10, 2010, at 4:05 AM, the Palo Alto Police Department responded to a reported carjacking on 200 block of University Avenue. The victim said she was sitting in her car in front of Pizza My Heart waiting for her husband when her passenger door was opened. She turned, thinking it was her husband, but instead saw the suspect standing at the door with what appeared to be a handgun. The suspect, described as possibly an Hispanic male, told the victim to exit the vehicle, which she did. The suspect began to drive away and nearby witnesses gave chase on foot. The vehicle turned south on Ramona Street and witnesses lost sight of it after that.

Police officers arrived on the scene and broadcasted the information regarding the crime and a description of the stolen vehicle to surrounding agencies. Shortly after, San Mateo Police located the stolen vehicle in the Peninsula Avenue and San Mateo Drive area and pursued the suspect before losing sight of him and the vehicle. After searching the area, San Mateo Police located the victim's vehicle again in the area of Bays Water Avenue and Park Street. A subject fitting the description of the suspect was observed walking away from the vehicle and was detained at the scene. The victim was brought to the subject's location in San Mateo and she positively identified the subject as the person who took her vehicle. The weapon used in the crime was not located.

The suspect, 33 year-old Raymond Charles Lewis of San Francisco, was intoxicated and had been visiting a bar or bars in downtown Palo Alto. He may have been trying to get back to San Francisco. Lewis was arrested and transported to San Jose Main Jail where he was booked for car jacking.
