Palo Alto Fire Watch Activation for July 4th, 2010

Palo Alto - On July 4, the Palo Alto Fire Department's Office of Emergency Services will be activating the Palo Alto Amateur Radio Emergency Services/Radio Amateur Civilian Emergency Services (ARES/RACES), also known as "HAM" radio operators. This is an annual event for the 4th of July holiday.  The activation is intended to provide a fire watch for the foothills and surrounding areas and will involve placing radio operator "lookouts" that will be able to immediately report any unusual sightings or reports to the Palo Alto Communications Center for police and fire assistance.

The radio operators will be placed at strategic locations such as the Stanford Dish, the Arastradero Preserve, Fire Station #8 in Foothills Park, Los Trancos Woods, Montebello Ridge and Skyline Boulevard. This activation also involves the Foothills Park Rangers and the Stanford Department of Public Safety.  A briefing will be conducted at 6:00 pm and radio operators will be deployed to their locations from approximately 7:30 to 10:30 pm.

In addition to providing an increased level of safety and notification for the city, the activation will also test the operability of the communications effectiveness in the foothills and the surrounding environment. The capabilities of the ARES / RACES group are seen as a potential valuable communications resource during disaster situations and other large-scale emergency events.
