Palo Alto, CA –Mitchell Park Library & Community Center will soon close so that construction of a new environmentally-innovative joint library and community center can begin. The Library will close its current location on Saturday, June 5 at 6 p.m. The Mitchell Park Community Center will close on June 12, 2010 after the Ground Breaking Ceremony. The festivities will include entertainment, activities for children, displays featuring the new building, free ice cream, and a ceremonial event to signify the start of construction.
When the new 56,000 square foot joint facility reopens in the summer of 2012, it is expected to meet LEED gold or higher standard, providing the community with a green, environmentally sustainable building. The first new City building constructed in nearly 50 years, it will include a multi-purpose event room, 100 person program room, separate teen and children’s library spaces, group study rooms, technology center, classrooms, a game room, half-court basketball area, and a café. The project is being funded by Measure N, a $76 million bond measure passed by Palo Alto voters in November 2008.
On Monday, June 28, 2010, Mitchell Park Library will reopen in a temporary facility located at the Cubberley Community Center Auditorium, 4050 Middlefield Road. The temporary library will hold most of the current collection, including books, DVDs, and CDs. It will also provide access to 16 desktop computers and 13 loaner laptops for Internet and processing use, as well as free Wi-Fi access.
The bookdrop in the parking lot at Mitchell Park Library will be open for returns until Friday, June 11; the indoor bookdrop will be closed. Beginning Monday, June 14, library items can be returned in the bookdrop at Cubberley. Items can also be returned to the Children’s Library, 1276 Harriet St., or the Main Library, 1213 Newell Rd. The Mitchell Park Community Center will remain open through the end of the 2010 school year. Community Center activities will be relocated to other city sites during the closure.
