Contact : Diane Jennings, Library Director    650-329-2403

Palo Alto, CA – The City will host a community meeting on Thursday, March 18 from 7-8:30 PM to discuss the plans for the new Mitchell Park Library and Community Center and the renovation of Downtown Library. An update on the temporary library at Cubberley Community Center that will provide service while Mitchell Park Library is closed will also be given. The meeting will be held at the Mitchell Park Community Center, 3800 Middlefield Road.

Measure N, which was passed by 69.4% of Palo Alto’s voters in November 2008, will fund the construction of a new joint library and community center facility at Mitchell Park, a major renovation of Downtown Library, and an expansion and renovation of Main Library.

Group 4 Architecture of South San Francisco has been hired to complete the design and construction drawings for the Mitchell Park, Downtown and temporary library projects. The temporary library at the Cubberley Community Center is now under construction, and the design plans for the Mitchell Park and Downtown facilities are 95% complete. Construction on Downtown Library is scheduled to begin this spring, and the new Mitchell Park Library and Community Center will be underway this summer. The construction at Main Library will begin after the new Mitchell Park Library is open in 2012.

The March 18 meeting will include presentations by architects from Group 4 and City staff. Specific topics for discussion will include the following:

  • Update on the temporary library at Cubberley Community Center
  • Site and floor plans for the new Mitchell Park facility
  • Tree plan for the Mitchell Park facility
  • Interior finishes for the Downtown Library
  • Construction staging for the projects
  • Update from the Teen Charrette for the Mitchell Park Library & Community Center

Staff from the City’s Public Works, Library, and Community Services departments as well as the City Manager’s Office will be available to answer questions. For more information, please contact Diane Jennings at 650-329-2403.
