Palo Alto, CA – The San Antonio Road overcrossing at Alma Street and Central Expressway in the cities of Mountain View and Palo Alto will undergo maintenance repairs to existing railings, curbs, sidewalks and other surfaces that have degraded since the overcrossing was built in 1961. The work will begin in February 2010 and is scheduled to be completed in April 2010. Traffic delays can be expected.

During certain phases of the work, detours for vehicles and pedestrians will be needed and vehicles may experience minor delays. The work will require lane closures on San Antonio Road and occasional closure of the ramps between San Antonio Road and Alma Street/Central Expressway. Lane and ramp closures will occur between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., on weekdays or on weekends.

The City of Mountain View is the project manager and will oversee the work being performed by American Civil Constructors West Coast, Inc. Mountain View will also provide notifications about impending project work via changeable message signs on all approaches to the work area, newspaper and website postings at
The project is funded in part by a $597,000 Federal Highway Bridge Program (HBR) grant along with matching funds from the cities. The City of Mountain View is matching funds in the amount of $174,000 (66%) and City of Palo funding of $90,000 (34%) will make up the remainder of the $861,000 total project.  Funding for the City of Palo Alto share is available in Capital Improvement Project, PE-06001.

Originally built in 1961, the San Antonio Road overcrossing at Alma Street was seismically retrofitted in 1994.  The overcrossing consists of the main San Antonio Road structure and two ramps leading to Alma Street.  Approximately two-thirds of the bridge is in Mountain View and one-third is in Palo Alto.

The structure is maintained by the City of Mountain View with cooperation from Palo Alto under an existing agreement dated August 31, 1979.  After a routine bi-annual inspection in 2005, Caltrans placed the structure on the list of "structurally deficient" bridges.
