Contact : Elizabeth Ames, Senior Engineer, Public Works    650-444-4388
Palo Alto, CA – A volunteer tree planting event hosted by the City of Palo Alto and in conjunction with the non-profit organization CANOPY is scheduled for Saturday, January 30, from 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM on California Avenue. Volunteers will receive training before planting the trees in organized teams. There will also be a Mayor's Tree Planting Ceremony at 12:30 PM at 414 California Avenue.  Event will be held rain or shine.

Work began on the California Avenue Street Tree Replacement Project on January 4, 2010, and will continue into February. Phase one of the project went through an expedited public design review process to select street trees for replanting on California Avenue from El Camino Real to Park Boulevard. In November 2009, the City Council approved a street tree plan  that includes a mixture of over 60 new evergreen and deciduous trees. The second phase of the California Avenue Streetscape Improvement project is currently under design and includes new benches, kiosks, bike racks, news racks, a new fountain, trees and furniture in the plaza area near the Caltrain Station, street resurfacing, possible potted plants, and possible lane reconfiguration. This construction work and fixture placement is expected to begin as early as fall 2010.

If you would like to volunteer for the planting event, on Saturday, sign-in at the Canopy Volunteer Headquarters on Mimosa Lane, located next to County Sun Market at 440 California Avenue. Dress for outdoor weather, Canopy will provide tools and gloves. The number of volunteer planting teams is limited, but EVERYONE is welcome to attend this event.
