Contact : Kelly Morariu, Deputy City Manager    (650) 329-2452
Palo Alto, CA – The City will host a community meeting on Thursday, October 29, from 7-8:30 p.m., to discuss the plans for the new Mitchell Park Library and Community Center and the renovation of the Downtown Library.  Plans for a temporary library at the Cubberley Community Center to provide service while the Mitchell Park Library is closed will also be presented. The meeting will be held at the Mitchell Park Community Center, 3800 Middlefield Road.

Measure N, which was passed by 69.4% of Palo Alto's voters in the November 2008 election, will fund the construction of a new joint library and community center facility at Mitchell Park, a major renovation of the Downtown Library, and an expansion and renovation of the Main Library.

Group 4 Architecture, of South San Francisco, has been hired to complete the design and construction drawings for the Mitchell Park and Downtown projects. Design plans are 70% complete for the Mitchell Park Library and Community Center, 90% complete for the Downtown Library, and nearly complete for the Temporary Library.

Construction on the Temporary Library will begin in approximately  four months.  Construction on the Mitchell Park Library and Community Center and the Downtown Library will begin in approximately nine months. The construction at Main Library will begin after the new Mitchell Park Library is open in 2012. Therefore, further design of the Main Library project will begin in early 2011.

The October 29 meeting will begin with an overview by Group 4 of the Mitchell Park Library and Community Center and Downtown Library projects, and  Temporary Library. The public will have an opportunity to learn about the progress of the designs. Specific topics for discussions will be:
