Palo Alto, CA – The City is expecting a record number of shoppers at its Citywide Yard Sale this year. The biennial event is on Saturday, June 6, 2009, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Over 370 residents have registered their yard sale. Coordinated by the City’s Zero Waste Program for over ten years, this is the highest number of participants in the event’s history.
“With the combination of the slow economy and our extensive outreach and planning, we’re expecting a record number of shoppers this year,” said Wendy Hediger, Zero Waste Coordinator.
New features at the event include “Captain Greenbeard’s Treasure Hunt” game for children. The official yard sale map lists the game’s eight treasure locations. Prizes for children completing the treasure hunt will be provided by sponsors. Sponsors will also be offering coupons for free hot beverages to shoppers bringing their own mug. The yard sale map, drink coupons and treasure hunt game sheet will be available on the yard sale web site starting June 1, 2009 and in the June 5, 2009, edition of the Palo Alto Weekly.
“We want to welcome residents and visitors to Palo Alto for an enjoyable day of shopping, saving money, giving old treasures a new life, and doing something good for our environment,” said Hediger.
In addition to reducing waste, purchasing second-hand items has a smaller carbon footprint than brand-new items, which require more energy and resources to produce and transport.
The City of Palo Alto Zero Waste Program works with the community to conserve resources, minimize material consumption and to reduce our community’s waste by 90 percent by 2021. For more information about Zero Waste, go to www.cityofpaloalto.org/zerowaste
