Palo Alto, CA - The Santa Clara County District Attorney's office has issued charges against Jeffrey Owen Smith, a 38 year old former Palo Alto resident, based on a string of robberies that occurred between September and December of last year. Many of the robberies occurred near the two Caltrain stations in Palo Alto, on California and University Avenues. Palo Alto police worked jointly with Transit Police from the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office to investigate and apprehend the robber responsible for the series of "train passenger robberies."

Smith is currently serving time in San Mateo County Jail after being convicted for a November 18, 2008 robbery in Menlo Park. He is charged with attempted robbery from an incident in North Palo Alto, which occurred earlier in the evening on November 18.

Smith is also charged with robberies of lone women in Palo Alto on November 15, October 5, September 10, and September 8, 2008.

Finally, he is charged with possession of stolen property, based on evidence located during a search of his residence on November 19, 2008.

Each of the six counts is a felony, with a potential prison sentence of up to 5 years for each of the robbery counts and for up to 3 years for the possession of stolen property count
