Arrest Made In 2002 Rape Of Elderly Woman
Contact : Agent Dan Ryan, Palo Alto Police Department    408-406-1330
Palo Alto, CA. - Police today announce the arrest of the suspect believed to be responsible for the brutal 2002 attack of a 94 year-old woman.

On May 10, 2002, police responded to a senior assisted living center on El Camino Way, when a resident reported that she had been beaten and raped by an intruder.

Originally, evidence led to the arrest of a man who lived several blocks from the scene; he was arrested in July, 2002. Further investigation later cleared that man of the allegation, and he was released.

Continuing the investigation, detectives linked evidence to a different suspect, and obtained a warrant for his arrest. Roberto Cruz RECENDES, 40 years-old, who was currently living in Mexico, was detained by Mexican law enforcement officials, based on our warrant. He was extradited to Los Angeles, CA, on 8/13/2008.

Met in Los Angeles by our detectives. RECENDES was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail that evening, charged with one count of sexual assault during the commission of a burglary, and one count of elder abuse, with great bodily injury. He is currently being held without bail. His photograph is attached.
