Foothills Park and Pearson-Arastradero Preserve Reopen July 16
Contact : Lester Hodgins, Supervisor of Open Space    650-329-2423
Palo Alto, CA -- Foothills Park and the adjoining Pearson-Arastradero Preserve will reopen on Wednesday, July 16 at 8 a.m. and return to regular operating hours. Both preserves where closed temporarily on Sunday afternoon, July 13, in the interest of public safety following the report of a mountain lion attack. That report was later unsubstantiated by an exhaustive investigation by California Department of Fish and Game and the City’s Open Space Rangers.

This event is a good reminder that we share Foothills Park and Pearson Arastradero Preserve with mountain lions. Mountain lion precautions and notices are posted at the preserves’ authorized entrance points. California Department of Fish and Game offers the following suggestions when traveling in Mountain Lion Country:

  • Do not hike alone
  • Keep small children and animals close by
  • If you encounter a lion, make yourself look bigger and make noise.
  • If attacked, fight back
Help the Rangers track mountain lion activity by promptly reporting all sightings to Palo Alto Police Communications 24 hours a day at 650-329-2413.
