Contact : Detective Brian Philip, City of Palo Alto Police Department    650-329-2637
Palo Alto, CA - On May 14, 2008, at approximately 11:50 a.m., a Palo Alto Police Officer was assaulted by a yet to be identified suspect.  Officer Doran was parked at Mitchell Park typing a police report when she heard someone walking quickly toward her patrol vehicle. She immediately looked toward the park and saw a white male subject crossing the parking lot on foot. She noticed that the subject was staring at her in a disturbed manner. When Officer Doran attempted to exit her patrol vehicle, the subject threw an empty glass beer bottle at the officer. The bottle flew through the open patrol car window striking Officer Doran in the left arm and back. The bottle was thrown with such force that it shattered upon contact with the officer.

The officer quickly exited her vehicle, pointed her taser at the subject and called for additional patrol units. Upon seeing the taser, the subject placed his hands onto the trunk of the patrol car and remained there. Responding units arrived within two minutes and safely took the suspect into custody. The taser was not fired.

The subject did not have any identification and did not provide either his name or a reason for his actions. His identity will be determined during the booking process at the San Jose Main Jail. At the time of the incident, the subject was only wearing cargo shorts and tennis shoes.

Officer Doran suffered minor cuts and bruising to her left arm and back region. The Officer did not require medical attention. The suspect did not sustain any injuries.

The unknown suspect was charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a Police Officer and resisting arrest.
