Contact : Detective Brian Philip, City of Palo Alto Police Department    650-329-2637
Palo Alto, CA -- On May 7, 2008, at approximately 1:30 p.m., Palo Alto Police Communications received a 911 call reporting that a vehicle crashed into a house on the 3000 block of Bryant Street. Responding officers arrived to find a small Honda protruding out of the front of a residence located directly across from El Carmelo School.

The subsequent investigation revealed that a woman and her small child came to El Carmelo School to pick up three children. The driver parked her vehicle on the west side of Bryant Street and went into the school.  Upon returning to her vehicle, she safely secured her children into their respective seats, and began to back away from the curb. Due to an unknown reason, the vehicle suddenly reversed at a high rate of speed and collided with a house on the 3000 block of Bryant Street. The vehicle smashed through the front of the house landing in what appeared to be a living room area. Amazingly, none of the vehicle’s occupants were injured. The occupants consisted of the 40 year-old female driver and her four children ranging in age from 3 to 11 years of age. All of the occupants were wearing their seatbelts or were secured in a proper child seat.

One male homeowner was home at the time of the accident. He was uninjured and assisted the vehicle’s occupants when he discovered the accident.

Traffic was detoured for a short time while officers collected measurements and took photographs.  The street was re-opened at approximately 2:30 p.m.
