Alleged Bike Thief Nabbed via Craig’s List Ad
Contact : Dan Ryan, Agent, Police Department    408-406-1330
Palo Alto, CA -- Police responded to the 1100 block of Clark Way today on a report of a pair of stolen bicycles, which had been taken from an open garage sometime in the last 36 hours.

The victim noticed the theft last night, and checked on-line this morning, only to find two ads, including one brand-new posting, which listed similar bicycles for sale, at a reduced price. He notified police of his on-line sleuthing, and they followed up on his leads.

Officer Michael Kan posed as a prospective buyer and contacted the sellers listed in both ads. The first proved to be a legitimate owner so no sale was made.

The second "seller" had one of the stolen bikes and police confirmed that the serial number matched that of the stolen bike. The "seller" was arrested for possession of stolen property and he led police to the second missing bicycle. Both lightweight SCATTANTE road bikes, valued at $800 each, were recovered and returned to their resourceful owners.

Arrested was 22 year-old Anthony J. Gangi, a former Sonoma county resident, who had recently moved into Palo Alto. He was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail and charged with one count of possession of stolen property.
