Palo Alto, CA -- The Palo Alto Police Department’s Emergency Dispatch Center received approximately 200 phone calls reporting a noxious odor in the northern part of the City.  The unidentified odor was reported as predominately north of Embarcadero Road with some reports of the odor reaching the Midtown areas and a few reports of the same odor reaching the Barron Park neighborhoods.

Palo Alto Utilities and Fire Department dispatched units to the field in an attempt to locate the source.  City Gas Service personnel conducted tests using natural gas detection equipment with no reports or readings indicating problems.

Palo Alto Police Department issued an informational alert through the City’s Community Alerting and Notification System, sending approximately 22,000 messages to residents.  80% of those calls were received by a live person or an answering machine.   The City of Palo Alto reminds residents and businesses to register for Connect-CTY on the City’s website at www.cityofpaloalto.org, in order to receive alerts such as this.
