Palo Alto, CA –What does a spinning wheel, a skateboard, a punch press and cat furniture have in common? All these items, along with a variety of others are for sale at the Palo Alto Citywide Yard Sale on Saturday, June 1, from 8 a.m.- 2 p.m. Come out and enjoy the day shopping for bargains, searching for treasures and saving the environment.
An interactive map and listing of the more than 250-yard sale locations and merchandise will be available online May 24, at www.PaloAltoOnline.com/yardsale. A printed version will also be available in the May 31 edition of the Palo Alto Weekly.
“The interactive map makes it easy for people to plan their shopping strategy – so they can get to all the sales they’re interested in visiting,” said Wendy Hediger, Environmental Specialist.
Zero Waste Palo Alto and the Palo Alto Weekly have organized the Palo Alto Citywide Yard Sale to help keep perfectly good items out of the landfill – reducing waste, conserving resources and reducing our community’s carbon footprint. “By coordinating yard sales, we hope to encourage the Bay Area community to keep useful items out of the landfill,” said Hediger.
Purchasing second-hand items not only reduces waste, it has a smaller carbon footprint than buying new items because you are saving all the embodied energy in those items. New items require resources to produce and transport. Reusing functional items is better than recycling,” said Hediger. “It is good for us, our community and the environment. By shopping the yard sales, you are not just bargain hunting, you’re making a difference.”
Zero Waste Palo Alto is a program of the Public Works Department. Our mission is to work in partnership with the community to eliminate waste wherever possible before then managing the discards we do have through reuse, recycling and composting.
