Bomb Scare at Cubberley Campus
Contact : Sandra Brown, Sergeant, City of Palo Alto, Police Department    650-704-2930
Palo Alto, CA - Palo Alto police responded to the Cubberley Community Center located at 4000 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto today, at 1:05 p.m.  Police received a 911 call from the campus that a student made some suspicious comments concerning weapons. The teacher went to the office to call police and returned to the class to discover that the student had fled leaving his backpack in the classroom. Through some miscommunications, it was believed that the student may have had a bomb in his backpack. The students as well as several nearby classrooms evacuated for a couple of hours.

The involved classroom is under the authority of the Foothill-DeAnza Community College and their police officers responded as well as the Santa Clara County Bomb Squad, an Explosive Detection Canine from Stanford Department of Public Safety and the Palo Alto Police and Fire Departments.

After a short time, it was determined that the backpack did not contain any explosives, and also, that no threats of a bomb were heard from the student. The student was released to his parents and was not arrested. The campus was re-opened and classes continued.
