Palo Alto, CA – The Palo Alto City Library invites the community to celebrate diverse cultures as it kicks off the "Celebrating Cultures" initiative with the “Diwali, Festival of Lights” event taking place on Sunday, October 29. This free event for all ages will have fun activities and entertainment for the whole family to enjoy, including music, dance, henna, crafts, and more. The event will take place at Rinconada Library from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Diwali, which means “row of lamps,” is celebrated every autumn in the Northern Hemisphere and signifies the triumph of light over dark or good over evil. Attendees can experience traditional Diwali activities, such as bindi, music and dance performances, and rangoli art at the celebration.

The Library is inspired by the many cultures, languages and customs that make up our community. We honor our diversity through our “Celebrating Cultures” initiative, which provides various programs, services and collections that reflect Palo Alto and the Greater Bay Area. Through our International Languages collections, bilingual storytimes, community conversations and our New Americans Program, the Library provides rich resources and opportunities to learn about each other.

“The various cultural events offered by the library enables the Palo Alto community to learn about our rich cultural diversity,” said Library Director Monique le Conge Ziesenhenne. "It will also allow participants to learn about their neighbors and themselves in these new experiences."

The program is organized by the Palo Alto City Library and sponsored by the Friends of the Palo Alto Library.
