Police Arrest Residential Burglar After Victim Sees Him Enter Side Yard
Contact : Zach Perron, Captain, Police Department    650-329-2413
Palo Alto, CA – Police arrested a man for residential burglary yesterday thanks to a timely call from a resident who watched him enter her home's side yard.

On Thursday, February 9, 2017, at about 2:30 p.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received a call from a resident in the 200 block of Colorado Avenue.  The resident, a woman in her thirties, reported that she had been inside her home when she observed an unknown man enter her unlocked side yard gate.  She immediately left her house, got into her car, backed out of the driveway, and called 9-1-1.  While she was on the line with dispatchers, she was able to look through a window of her home and see that the suspect had somehow gotten inside.  The suspect likely did not know the victim had been home at the time of the crime.

Officers responded immediately and witnessed the suspect exiting the front door of the home holding some of the victim’s property in one hand, and a broomstick in the other.  The suspect ignored repeated police commands and waved the broomstick at officers as an improvised weapon.  One officer deployed a TASER at the suspect as he continued to ignore commands and attempted to walk away from the scene, but that had no apparent effect on him.  Officers had to tackle the suspect, who physically resisted arrested but was taken safely into custody a short time later.  Neither the suspect nor any officers were injured during the arrest.  The suspect displayed multiple signs of being under the influence of narcotics.  Paramedics from the Palo Alto Fire Department transported the suspect to a local hospital as a precaution, which is consistent with our standard procedures following any TASER application.

The investigation revealed that the suspect had used a heavy lawn ornament in the victim’s back yard to break a window and gain entry to the home.  Once inside, the suspect stole the victim’s purse before leaving out the front door and being confronted by officers.  Police recovered the stolen property at the arrest scene and returned it to the victim.

Police booked the suspect, 20-year-old Trung Quang Daole of Palo Alto, into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for residential burglary (a felony), resisting arrest (a misdemeanor), and being under the influence of narcotics (a misdemeanor).  His booking photo is attached to this release.

Detectives are investigating this case to see if the suspect may be linked to any other residential burglaries in Palo Alto or surrounding communities.
