Bicyclist Succumbs to Injuries Following Collision with Vehicle
Contact : Zach Perron, Lieutenant, Police Department    650-329-2413
Palo Alto, CA – A bicyclist in his seventies has succumbed to injuries sustained in a collision that occurred on Monday morning in Palo Alto.

On Monday, August 15, 2016, at about 9:40 a.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received a report of a major injury collision between a bicyclist and a vehicle that had just occurred in the intersection of Greenwood Avenue and Hutchinson Avenue.  Officers and personnel from the Palo Alto Fire Department responded immediately, and found 73-year-old East Palo Alto resident Eugene Conroy unconscious and with major injuries.  Paramedics transported him to a local hospital, where he died the following day.

The driver of the involved vehicle (a 1993 Nissan Altima sedan) was a Palo Alto resident in his seventies.  He was not injured, remained at the scene, and was cooperative with investigators.  There is no indication that either drugs or alcohol were a factor.

While personnel from our Specialized Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) Team are continuing their investigation and will eventually determine the exact cause of the collision, initial indicators are that the bicyclist did not stop at the stop sign while traveling eastbound on Greenwood Avenue.  The vehicle, which was proceeding northbound on Hutchinson Avenue and did not have a stop sign, struck the bicyclist in the intersection.
