Police Seek Overnight Burglar
Contact : Zach Perron, Lieutenant, Police Department    650-329-2413
Palo Alto, CA – A burglar entered a residence overnight while the occupants slept, stealing a purse and cell phone, and escaped undetected.  The suspect is at large.

On Sunday, June 12, 2016, at about 9:09 a.m., our 24-hour dispatch center received a call from a resident in the 3400 block of Kenneth Drive reporting that their home had been burglarized overnight.

The investigation revealed that an unknown suspect had entered the residence, likely via an unlocked sliding door, sometime after 2 a.m.  The victim, a woman in her fifties, learned of the crime when a Good Samaritan knocked on her door at 8:50 a.m. and returned her purse, which he had found on the street nearby.  She had left the purse in the hallway of her home.  The victim checked her purse and discovered that all the cash was gone, but that nothing else had been taken.  She then checked her home, and noticed that her cell phone had been taken from its charger on the kitchen counter.  Her adult son, a man in his twenties, had gone to bed at 2 a.m. and not noticed anything awry at that point.

Detectives are actively investigating this case.  Overnight burglaries of occupied homes occur infrequently in Palo Alto; this is the first such case since May 2015, and only the fifth case since July 2012.

Police recommend that residents lock and secure all doors and windows overnight.  For a list of other crime prevention tips, visit our website at
