Contact : Rich Bullerjahn, Agent, City of Palo Alto, Police Department    650-743-9970
Palo Alto, CA - At 9:35 p.m. on July 1st, 2007, several fire alarms were received for the building located at 310 University Ave. 50 firefighters from Palo Alto, Mountain View, Sunnyvale and Santa Clara County responded to the blaze that damaged four businesses that occupied 310 University Ave. Palo Alto Police evacuated the area and closed off the 300 block of University Ave, as well as the 500 Block of
Bryant St. The fire caused damage to the entire second floor and caused a roofcollapse. The building was unoccupied and no injuries were reported because of the fire.

The main fire is contained, but fire personnel are still on the scene to check for hot spots and to remain until the building is deemed safe for arson investigators and building inspectors to investigate. The Santa Clara County Arson Investigation Task Force will be responding this morning to try to determine the cause of the fire. Detectives from the Palo Alto Police Department and ATF are working in conjunction with the arson task force in this investigation.

The Palo Alto fire department estimates the damage to be approximately 2-3 million dollars. Other associated businesses are reporting water and smoke damage, and several businesses along the 300 block of University Ave are without power.

University Ave in the 200-300 blocks is expected to be closed this morning, as well as the 500 block of Bryant St. until further notice.
