Palo Alto, CA – Police arrested a suspect in San Jose hours after he drove away from a car stop and led officers on a short vehicle pursuit through the streets of Palo Alto.

On Thursday, August 27, 2015, at about 8:22 p.m., a patrol officer stopped the suspect in his green 1996 Dodge Ram pickup for a Vehicle Code violation.  The officer made the stop in the 3200 block of El Camino Real, just south of Hansen Way.  There were no passengers in the vehicle.  After contacting the suspect and obtaining his identification, the officer learned the suspect was on active probation out of Santa Clara County for narcotics possession and resisting arrest.  The officer also noticed that the suspect displayed symptoms of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.  When a second officer arrived as back-up, the first officer asked the suspect to step out of the vehicle so they could conduct a probation search and DUI investigation.  The suspect then drove off at a high rate of speed.  The back-up officer, who had been standing at the passenger door, jumped back in order to avoid having his feet run over by the truck.  No one was injured.

The suspect failed to stop for the pursuing police cars, and led officers up El Camino Real to eastbound Embarcadero Road before turning onto residential streets.  When the suspect accelerated to unsafe speeds (approaching 60 miles per hour), officers stopped chasing him out of concern for the safety of the public.  They last saw the suspect turning eastbound on Hamilton Avenue from Waverley Street when they were still several blocks behind him.

Over the course of the next few hours, detectives and officers conducted follow-up investigation on the suspect's whereabouts, and eventually located him at a private residence in the 500 block of North 21st Street in San Jose.  Officers from the San Jose Police Department responded, took the suspect safely into custody without incident at about 12:54 a.m. on August 28, and turned him over to the custody of Palo Alto officers.

Police booked the suspect, 52-year-old Robert Angelo Ayala of San Jose, into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for felony assault with a deadly weapon on an officer (for nearly striking the back-up officer), felony evading, driving the under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs (a misdemeanor), and driving on a suspended driver license (also a misdemeanor).  Officers also booked him for a probation violation.  A booking photo of the suspect is attached to this release.
