Palo Alto, CA - On July 1, 2007, the Walgreen’s building at 310 University Ave sustained fire damage. As of this afternoon, the building was deemed unsafe by the Fire department and the building inspector. At 1:30 p.m., a structural engineer was requested and completed an assessment of the building. The engineer deemed the building was unsafe, and that additional supports were needed to create a safe environment for investigators.

The 300 block of University Ave., and the 500 block of Bryant St. will be closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic. The 400 block of Bryant St will be closed to vehicle traffic, and the 200 block of University Ave will be closed to vehicle traffic. All of these closures will be for an undetermined amount of time.

Palo Alto Police Chief Nicholas Marinaro, said "The Palo Alto Fire Department and the Palo Alto Police Department have made a joint request for ATF’s National Response Team (NTF) to assist us in the origin and cause of this fire."

This response team will respond within 24 hours of being requested this
afternoon and stay until the investigation is completed. The NTF has brought definitive expertise and an array of state-of-the-art equipment to the investigation of major fire and explosives incidents since 1978.

Further updates will continue as they come in.
