Palo Alto, CA – A suspect armed with a handgun robbed a man and a woman of a mobile telephone and a wallet near the Friendship Bridge at about 9:00 p.m. Tuesday night before fleeing on a bicycle.  The victims were not injured and the suspect is at large.

On Tuesday August 18, 2015 at about 10:00 p.m. our 24-hour dispatch center received a call from the East Palo Alto Police Department reporting that an armed robbery had occurred an hour earlier on the San Francisquito Creek Trail in Palo Alto.  Officers from the Palo Alto Police Department responded to the area but were unable to locate the suspect.

The investigation revealed that, at about 8:45 p.m., the victims, a couple in their forties, were walking westbound on the San Francisquito Creek Trail near the Friendship Bridge that connects East Palo Alto with Palo Alto.  A man riding a bicycle approached the victims from behind, brandished a semiautomatic handgun and demanded their valuables.  After taking a wallet and mobile telephone from the victims, the man fled westbound on the trail.  The couple returned home and reported the incident to the East Palo Alto Police Department, who determined that the incident had actually occurred in Palo Alto.

The victims described the suspect as an African American male in his early thirties, wearing a red baseball cap, dark colored sweatshirt, and dark colored denim pants.  The suspect is said to stand 5 feet 10 inches tall and weigh about 150 pounds.  A sketch of the suspect is attached to this release.

Detectives are actively investigating this case.  No similar robberies have occurred in this area.
