Contact : Zach Perron, Lieutenant, Police Department    650-329-2413
Palo Alto, CA -- The Palo Alto Police Department has received a $41,000 grant from the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control to conduct targeted enforcement of alcohol-related crimes over the coming year, and to fund alcohol education efforts as well.

The grant will cover overtime costs associated with 26 separate enforcement events through June 2016, to include stings where underage decoys will attempt to purchase alcohol at local restaurants, bars, and stores.  Officers will also focus on impaired driving and public intoxication, especially in and around downtown Palo Alto.

An additional part of the grant will cover education efforts.  Our personnel will coordinate three separate four-hour training sessions, conducted by agents from the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, for local employees of ABC licensees.  These classes will help those employees learn how to better prevent sales of alcohol to minors.

The Palo Alto Police Department will also give presentations at each of Palo Alto's middle schools and high schools on the problems associated with alcohol and drug use by minors.

Anyone convicted for the sale of alcohol to minors can expect a mandatory $1000 fine.  Any licensed business that violates laws or rules will face sanctions from the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, to include fines and/or suspensions or revocations of their liquor license.

We will release periodic updates on our enforcement efforts over the lifespan of the grant.
